Cockaleekie by Cosmo

We woke up to another glorious day aren’t we lucky. Mummy was worried though as she’d heard news about an oil spillage in Savick Brook which she thought might mean our Ribble link passage would be cancelled. As we were eating out alfresco breakfast see photo below who came by but the couple who were in the locks with us yesterday. Mummy asked them about the oil leak & bless them they pulled over & rang the Ribble link lock keeper for us. Mummy was then happy when she heard the passage was still on.

We all set off in the wonderful sunshine on walkies as we didn’t have far to cruise today. As we were walking back we saw 2 boats pass from Sheffield who mummy had briefly spoken to before. They’re from Intake & Woodhouse. Small world. We shouted to see if they were on the link tomorrow & they were. They kindly asked if mummy was alone & said they’d wait at next swing bridge round the corner so she didn’t have to do it herself. So we all ran back to the boat leapt on (well Barney was lifted in at speed!), unpegged & we were off. As we got round the corner the pair from the lock were there & they ran up & opened the bridge for us & said they had for narrowboat too. So it did really pay off that we waited for them yesterday what goes around comes around is one of mummy’s favourite sayings.

Mummy then put her foot down to try & catch other 2 boats for last swing bridge. The canal was really pretty but narrow & lots of reeds in parts. Mummy said like the Chesterfield was last year. We didn’t catch them but the next swing bridge was at the visitor moorings at Tarleton & just as we pulled up at bridge Sheffield folks appeared & did the bridge for us.

We moored up along with all the other boats booked in to do the link. It was only about lunchtime. It was a brilliant mooring place as the bank was really soft so Daquiri & I tried to dig through to Australia. We kept getting told off as we made a right mess of the bank. You can see what fun we had in the photos.

Mummy sat out & sunbathed inbetween telling us off. Then she took us for walkies to see the lock where we’d go out onto the River Douglas. On the way back there was a playing field so we were let off in that. Daquiri found a really black boggy bit at the side so we both played in that & we changed colour to a lovely shade of black.

When playing in the field I needed a pee & for some reason instead of squatting my back leg kept coming up. Cockaleekie Cosmo that’s me! Apparently it’s what grown up dogs do & I’m a big boy now.

As we strolled back mummy let us go in the canal to try & get clean. Well I went in Daquiri was too chicken. Old Barney came straight down the bank & went in but then he couldn’t get out so mummy had to ties us up & go & rescue Barney. As we all walked back past the boats all the other boaters were killing them selves laughing at us: Me semi clean, Barney bedraggled & wet & Daquiri absolutely black! A neighbouring boat lent mummy a watering can to get D clean. He didn’t like that. He should have gone in the canal shouldn’t he!

Mummy got busy cooking tea for Ade & scarey Uncle Ant. Harry the lock keeper came round & scared mum even more with instructions about tomorrow. Luckily time is now 9am to meet not 8.12am. Ant & Ade arrived & they all had tea on the picnic table contraption. Oh that was a whole other story watching mummy put that up. Again we were entertaining the other boats. After tea Ade left & we had an early night in preparation for our BIG adventure tomorrow.

  1. Morning Cosmo and the boys and your Mum. I see you got through Ribble Link ok, as saw your boat this morning whilst walking my two golden boys and our Lab girl. Not sure which one of you barked at us as we went past. Hope we did not disburb your Mum. Hope you enjoy the Lancaster Canal, as we did it last year on a narrowboat and enjoyed it so much. Not sure how long you on the Lancaster for, but as we are one it a lot ourselves we may see you around. If we can help with any information for you Mum let us know. Lesley

    • Ah thank you so much what a lovely message. It will have been Daquiri barking he’s the noisy one!

Are you on a narrowboat now or do you live up here?

My family is up here Garstang Blackpool & Preston so am up here for a month.

Having a great time so far 🙂

      • We live in Preston, and walk the dogs on the park every morning that is by the side of the canal where you moored. We have done narrowboat holidays nearly every year for the last 10 years (had done a couple even further back as well) But we had never done our local canal, so after doing the Pennie Ring in two weeks we decided to have an easier holiday with hardly any locks. We had walked it in various places but is different when you are on a boat. We have recently brought a cabin cruiser on the Lancaster to enjoy it more and will be going on holiday with it at the end of June. Would love a narrowboat, but there is a big difference in cost :-0
Next year we hope to take in through the ribble link and on to Leeds Liverpool, the dogs love the freedom of boating holidays getting on and off when moored up and don’t tend to wander. Enjoy your yourselves and if we get out for a weekend you never know we may see you again, but looking forward to reading your blog.
